Sauze d’Oulx (Italy): Great for all levels of skiing and snowboarding experience with excellent après ski facilities, including a range of restaurants to suit every taste and every pocket.

Most up and coming resort:
Bankso (Bulgaria): Recently developed, Bankso combines traditional Bulgarian charm with modern hotels. Its slopes are suitable for everyone from beginners to semi-pros and the off-piste entertainment is growing in reputation.

Best for value:
Arinsal (Andorra): From only £19 per person, per night on a room only basis, Arinsal offers great value accommodation for winter sports enthusiasts in 2009/2010.

Most family friendly resort:
Zell am See (Austria): With a traffic free centre, Zell am See offer a safe zone for the whole family with nursery slopes for beginners and black runs for the more advanced.

Best for novices:
Alpe d’Huez (France): With a free lift pass and the option to buy a limited access daily ski pass locally for around 10 euros, Alpe d’Huez is ideal for those who want to learn how to ski in their own time, without too big an outlay.

Best for snowboarders:
Mayrhofen (Austria): One of Europe’s top snowboard resorts thanks to the world-class Burton fun park, which includes quarter & half pipes (120m long), a boarder cross course and multiples of kickers.

Best for thrill-seekers
Chamonix (France): Set at the foot of Mont Blanc, the Vallee Blanche offers some of the most challenging off-piste skiing in Europe.
