The Northern Territory stretches from the desert heart of the Red Centre, up to the coastal and more tropical north, otherwise known as the Top End. Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the many landforms of the desert are still the main attractions of the state, however, the World Heritage wilderness of Kakadu National Park in the Top End, is a definite rival to the rock! With the contrasting landscape of the tropical north and the dusty desert in the south, the Northern Territory offers breathtaking scenery, rich Aboriginal culture, stunning national parks and fantastic opportunities for camping, walking and generally enjoying nature at its most glorious. During the north’s dry season, from May to October, the weather is ideal for touring and camping adventures.

Top Tips

• Enjoying fine food and experiencing the great outdoors is part of what a holiday to Australia is about. The Sounds of Silence Dinner manages to combine both of these and with the added bonus of watching the sun set over Uluru, truly memorable and not to be missed.
• Do pay a visit to Kings Canyon, less well known that the Northern Territory's big rocks but truly remarkable and strangely beautiful. An overnight stay is highly recommended
• Take a hot air balloon flight from Alice Springs over the MacDonnell ranges, gently drifting above the vast outback landscape, it's the best way to appreciate the scenery.
• Thr Northen Territory is rich in Aboriginal culture and understanding a little about the different tribes, stories and rituals is a vital part of a visit here.
• Kakadu national Park is not to be missed, its vast wetlands which are home to plentiful wildlife including crocodiles. As well as wildlife there are some truly fascinating galleries of Aboriginal rock art.
• The Anangu, the traditional indigenous owners, respectfully request that visitors refrain from climbing Uluru (Ayers Rock).
